Rose, Penny, Ruth, Natalie, Serena, Jordan, Kristi, Jonie, and Jaylyn,
What a beautiful celebration we shared at the USA Volleyball Hall of Fame. While the ceremony itself was meaningful, it was the gathering of former players, friends, and a few new faces—our future torchbearers—that made it truly extraordinary.
I want to thank each of you for taking the time out of your busy lives to be part of such a deeply personal and significant moment for me. This wasn’t just another recognition—it was a tribute to a man who profoundly shaped my life. Honoring Dr. James E. Coleman, my mentor, setter coach, and graduate school advisor for 31 years, was something I will cherish forever. His wisdom and unwavering support helped guide not only my career but the person I became.
As I stood there, surrounded by so many familiar faces, I couldn’t help but feel the passage of time. It moves quickly—something we all come to realize as the years go on. That night reminded me how important it is to slow down and treasure the people, the memories, and the legacy we are building together.
To those of you who continue to pay it forward with your kind of magic, thank you. You carry our sport and its values into the future with passion, purpose, and love. I am endlessly grateful for that.
And a special thank-you to the individual(s) who generously provided our table—what a gift it was to share that space. Although I may not yet know your name, your kindness allowed me to sit beside those who have shaped my journey. I hope one day I get the chance to thank you in person.
May your summer be filled with joy, rest, and inspiration. I was truly honored to share that evening with all of you. Thank you for making it unforgettable.
Ruth
